Job Description
Director
The National Institute of Fundamental Studies is the only Institute of its kind, established by an Act of Sri Lankan Parliament. Some of its aims and objectives, amongst others, are to initiate, promote and conduct research and original investigation into fundamental studies in general, with particular emphasis on mathematics, physical and chemical sciences, life sciences, social sciences and philosophy, taken in the broadest sense.
The Institute invites applications from Sri Lankan citizens for the Post of Director from eminent scientists, with a proven track record in basic scientific research in any of the above disciplines and is currently active in such Research and Development activities. The Director will function as the Chief Executive Officer and the Chief Accounting Officer of the Institute and therefore needs to have good interpersonal skills coupled with strong administrative ability. He/ She should therefore uphold the principles of Academic excellence, transparency, accountability, democratic management and effective nonpartisan and administrative leadership.

Remuneration :
Salary code and the monthly salary scale of the employee category [UGC Circular No. 17/2016 and 17/2016(v)]
Basic salary UAC 05(i): Rs. 139,175-11X2925-171,350 p.m
He/she will also be entitled to Cost of Living Allowance, Contract allowance, Research allowance, Academic allowance, Transport and Fuel allowance, and Entertainment Allowance. If he/she is not appointed as a Research Professor/ Senior Research Professor, the salary and allowances will be determined by the Board of Governors.

Key Qualifications :
First Degree with a First Class or a Second Class Upper Division
And
A postgraduate degree preferably a Ph.D. from a recognized University
In addition to the implementation of the relevant provisions of the Act of the Parliament, the Director should have a proven ability to lead and direct multi-disciplinary research teams and experience in proper deployment and efficient management of human and other resources. In the broadest sense, as applicable to the NIFS, fundamental research in science and technology may be understood to be such as what maintains a reasonable balance between curiosity driven research and what is generally accepted as being applicable to the understanding of local problems.

Age Limit : Should not be more than 62 years. The applicant should provide substantial evidence of continuing high-caliber research and that he/she is physically and mentally fit to hold the position.
Benefits
Employees will contribute 10% of their salary to the NIFS Staff Provident Fund, while the Institute will contribute 15%. In addition, the Institute will contribute 3% of the salary to the ETF.
